New document by European Commission provides help in food package labeling issues


As far as the ‘instructions for use’ are concerned, can a food business operator use the symbol of a pan or an oven without using the words ‘pan’ or ‘oven’?

Can the acronym RI for Reference Intake be used on food labels?

Is it possible to label the content of components of voluntary nutrients, e.g. ‘omega 3 fatty acids’, as components of polyunsaturates? 

These and many more questions are answered in the new Commission Notice on Questions and Answers on the application of the Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011 that has been published:

The document provides answers to questions considering regulation on giving food information to consumers and is an update of the previous Q&A document adopted in January 2013.

…and the answers? No, a symbol of an oven or a pan cannot be used as a substitute for giving the information in words and numbers but can only be used in addition to these. The acronym RI is allowed to be used as long as it is explained in the package. Omega 3 fatty acids are not possible to be stated as components of polyunsaturates as the nutrition declaration is a closed list – although, they can be stated on the package e.g. under the nutrition declaration.
